reactivity in dogs

Reactivity is not a dog being disobedient or “dominant”.  It is not a training issue, nor can it be resolved by punishment or corrections. Then what is reactivity?  It is a complex emotional response (most often fear) to something in the dog’s environment (humans, other animals, noises, objects etc). Causes can be genetic, but they are likely due to a lack of or improper socialization or prior bad experiences.  It is an issue that must be addressed by careful management of the dog’s environment in conjunction with desensitization and counter-conditioning.  It may also require pharmaceutical intervention under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian and/or veterinary behaviorist.**
